Overview
Lipoprotein(a) — Lp(a) — is a variant of LDL: an LDL-like particle with an extra protein, apolipoprotein(a), bound to its apoB-100 (StatPearls). These particles are stickier than other LDL particles, making them more prone to causing blockages and clots (MedlinePlus).
The level is genetically determined — the apolipoprotein(a) gene accounts for more than 90% of the variation between people (StatPearls). You reach your adult level by about age 5, and it tends to stay there for life (MedlinePlus).
